Way before the Ranger became the bakkie of choice for South Africans, there was a time when American pick-ups were quite common here. The Ford F100, in fifth-generation form was one of the more popular choices and these days is quite desirable and well-suited to customization. 

This black beauty may have started out as a workhorse, but its previous owner poured a lot of love and attention (and Rands) into it, to transform it into a real head-turner. The changes are not only skin-deep either...

The lowered stance comes courtesy of a Ford Crown Victoria front suspension and at the rear it is mostly Mustang, with a 9-inch diff. The hunkered-down look is completed with dual-tone, five-spoke 20-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile rubber. Inside, the very neat cabin is trimmed in brown leather and Alcantara. A look inside the loadbed reveals a beautiful wood finish.

Under the bonnet, the 351ci (5.7L) V8 engine has received an Edelbrock intake and carb. The exhaust is an 8-into-1 that exits just in front of the right rear wheel, and boy does she burble. As it is a surprisingly quick machine, it is comforting to know that there are power-assisted disc brakes all-round.
