Following on from the famed "Gullwing" 300SL and later 190SL, the Mercedes-Benz W113 SL had big shoes to fill. The W113 did this with aplomb and was a strong seller from 1963 to 1971. The lead designers were the legendary Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi, who also designed the distinctive concave roof, giving the W113 its nickname “Pagoda”.

The Pagoda was produced with various engines but all models received inline-six cylinder motors with multi-port fuel injection. The many aluminium parts ensured a relatively light weight, while the short and wide chassis coupled with excellent suspension, strong brakes and intuitive steering gave the Pagoda great handling, especially for a car of that time. Even today a Pagoda is an absolute joy to drive.

The flagship 280SL saw introduction in December 1967 and was continued until the end of the W113 life cycle in February 1971. It produced a very healthy 168 bhp (around 125 kW) and added to the alure of the Pagoda as it now had that little “edge” to complete the faultless lines and exquisite drive.

This excellent example is finished in black over cream leather which, with its contrast, allow all the features of the Pagoda to stand out. This 280SL has been under meticulous custodianship for the past 11 years making it arguably one of the best driving Pagodas you're likely to find. The car performs absolutely superbly and has the optional hard top available.
