It was always going to be a challenge to develop a new "flagship" Porsche, a traditionalist marque if there ever was one. And so when the 928 arrived on the scene in 1977, it won critical acclaim, but sales were slow - it was perhaps too different for the Porsche faithful. Besides, a V8 petrol engine was somewhat out of tune with the times.

These days, however, transaxle Porsches (924, 944, 968 and 928) are rapidly rising in popularity, with demand driven not only by (still) relatively affordable pricing compared with the 911, but also because there cars were, inherently, good. The 928, in particular, is a very accomplished grand tourer, very advanced for its age and, in V8 S4 trim, packs a serious punch!

 

For the past three years, the 928 has been the Porsche with the fastest-rising values, and so it won't be too long before immaculate examples of S4s will sell for even headier prices. Remember, this was the flagship Porsche of its era!
